The attached illustration shows the villagers resting at the foot of a large cypress tree. In the distance, there is a view of Mount Fuji. Illustration It was produced as one of the series "Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji" which was published from approx. 1830 to 1832 in the late Edo period.
The illustrations were made by Hokusai Katsushik (1760-1849). He is one of the greatest and most prolific Japanese painters and creators of colorful ukiyo-e woodcuts. He became famous as an extremely prolific artist, great draftsman, landscape painter, and illustrator. In his paintings he recreated the then Japan. He painted, among others flowers, turtles, pheasants, roosters, bridges and cascades.
