Poster with a reproduction of the patent depicting a stethoscope by Berton G. Baird and Charles Klagges. Stethoscope is a diagnostic instrument commonly used in medicine. This device consists of a head (funnel and diaphragm that contact the patient's chest), wires (connecting the head to the lyre), lyre (conducting sound to the ear) and olives, which are inserted into the ear to auscultate the patient. The invention of the stethoscope is credited to the French physician René Laennec in 1816.
The subject of the patent is to provide a replaceable head and to make it entirely of non-metallic material, so that it does not cause discomfort to the patient during the examination. Patent No. US1841078 A was published in 1932 by the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
