SIG-Sauer P226 appeared in 1981 in connection with the entry of the SIG Sauer company to the competition for a new United States Army service pistol. It is a developed version of the earlier SIG-Sauer P220 pistol, differing from its predecessor mainly by an enlarged magazine for 15 rounds ofcartridges, an additional internal firing pin lock (protection against accidental firing). The gun works on the principle of short barrel recoil. The model also has a magazine release that can be transferred to the right side of the skeleton, thanks to which the pistol can be easily operated by both right and left-handed shooters.
SIG-Sauer P226 has earned an excellent reputation around the world. It is used by many police units around the world. The pistol - despite the loss (mainly due to the price) in the competition for the US Army service pistol - was accepted by the United States Navy SEALs.
Patent No. US4996787A was published in 1991 by the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
