This original illustration "Mosses" from the series "Plants" was made by Ernst Haeckel (1834- 1919), German biologist, philosopher and traveller.
Here is what he wrote about this illustration, among others:
"In the beauty of the shapes of the whole and of the individual parts of the body, and in the variety of formations, small mosses are in no way inferior to the great representatives of the higher 'plant world'. However, in order to see the "art forms of nature", you first need a magnifying glass - at low magnification (4-8 times). It is only at high magnification (200-400 times) that the wealth of beautiful motifs hidden in these delicate plants is fully revealed. In particular, the intricate 'network of cells' of the delicate leaves offers beautiful motifs for embroidery, while the capsule with its delicate lid and indented opening edge provides designs for caskets and bottles."
