This original illustration from the "Animals" series was commissioned by the Dictionary of Universal Natural History by the French botanist and geologist Charles Henry Dessalines d'Orbigny, who lived from 1806-1876. The accompanying graphic shows the Mantis Shrimp (Squilla Maculata), a small row of marine crustaceans from the armor group of relatively primitive structure with very poorly developed armor. Their body is elongated to a length of 34 cm, with a very long abdomen.
