Poster with reproduction of hair dryer patent by Emanuel Nielsen. The first hair dryers were produced at the AEG factory in Nuremberg in 1899. They were developed by an engineer of Polish origin, Michal Doliwo-Dobrowolski, who was the director of the Berlin factory for electrotechnical equipment of the AEG concern. These first hair-drying devices were named Fön (from the word "fen", meaning warm mountain wind).
The purpose of the invention is to provide a hair dryer that is simple in construction and efficient in operation. It includes an electric motor that forces air around an electric heater thereby providing the proper temperature for drying hair.
