This original illustration from the "Animals" series was done by François Levaillant, who was a French writer, explorer, naturalist, zoological collector and renowned ornithologist. He described many new species of birds based on birds he collected in Africa, and several birds were named after him.
The accompanying graphic is of the Great Toucan, a species of large bird in the Toucan family (Ramphastidae), the largest representative of this family. It lives in South America.
