This original illustration from the series "Animals" was made by William Saville-Kent , who was an English marine biologist. In 1884 he became inspector of fisheries in Tasmania. In 1889 he was appointed Commissioner of Fisheries in Queensland, and in 1892 he became Commissioner for Western Australia; a position he held until 1895. During this time he developed a technique for obtaining cultured pearls. Saville-Kent's discoveries were groundbreaking for obtaining cultured pearls, and the solutions he proposed are still used today.
The attached graphic is an echinoderms - a type of invertebrate animal. The internal and external body structure of adult echinoderms is characterized by five-radius symmetry.
